- Toby said: "Oh, I'd go for that one"
- Person said: "Thanks, Toby" and left
- The whole thing took about a minute
The Problem

Key Principles
The 80% rule:
- Just because someone can't do it 100% as well as you doesn't mean you shouldn't delegate
- If they can do it 80% as well, give it to them
- That last 20% doesn't really matter (and is probably in your own mind)
- Exception: Brain transplants need to be 100%, but cushion colors are fine at 80%
- Even brain surgeons - at some point the new doctor has to be given the operation
- That 20% difference is often just "I wouldn't do it like that" - but their way is probably fine, maybe even better
- How will they get to 100%? They have to start somewhere
- If they're at 80%, hand it over - if you wait for 100%, you'll wait forever
Challenge principle:
- You have two people: Louise (experienced, can do it in her sleep) and Miles (new, will find it challenging)
- If it's an emergency, give it to Louise
- If you have time, give it to Miles - even though he'll need more supervision and take longer
- Miles learns, gets enjoyment from succeeding at a challenge, becomes happier
- You keep Louise in reserve for bigger, more difficult things
- Eventually Miles becomes as good as Louise, and Louise moves up too
- If you always give it to Louise: she's bored, Miles is bored = lose-lose
